Eat Good, Feel Good: Impact of Diet on Men’s Emotional Health

One of the often overlooked aspects of men’s health has to do with emotional experiences, situations, and conditions. It is not uncommon for men to experience periods of depression as they adapt to changes that come along during their life-span. This may be related to retirement, marital status, physical health – and can vary in extremity. Self-esteem and confidence may waiver, which can cause further confusion and chaos as men make the transition into older-adulthood.

Anxiety impacts self-esteem, which make coping strategies and preventative measures key. Battling anxiety may be effective with simple life changes, such as diet or exercise routines, or could involve pharmacological intervention.

A smart approach to fending off bouts of anxiety and stress includes making some modifications to daily diet and nutrition. Primary care providers may also make some recommendations surrounding dietary supplements that can help toward combating anxiety (and depression) through daily nutrition. The link between what you eat, and how you feel about yourself is a compelling one; one that is easily altered by making practical, prudent changes.

Some foods that may subsequently affect self-esteem include the following:

Citrus – Fresh oranges, lemons, and limes are an excellent food choice when looking at reducing anxiety and depression. These fruits contain loads of Vitamin C, which can lower blood pressure. This will help to keep nervousness and anxiety down when tensions rise.

Fish – Even individuals that eat a plant-based diet could benefit from eating Salmon. Salmon impacts the adrenaline levels when feeling tension or stress. In essence, eating more salmon can keep you calmer.

Greens – There are numerous health advantages to eating more green vegetables. One advantage is that they help reduce anxiety in men which can lead to improved self-esteem. For example, asparagus contains folic acid, which can help keep depressed moods at bay. Spinach, on the other hand, is full of magnesium which is attributed to overall feelings of health and well-being.

Fats – Eating healthy fats is another prudent step toward improving sense of well-being and reducing anxiety in men. Rich, virgin olive oil and avocado can lower blood pressure when eaten in moderation. Avocados are rich in potassium, which has many health benefits.

Oats – There is something calming, comforting, and filling about a steaming bowl of oatmeal. The fiber in oats help with regularity, which can improve mood, and also induces a sense of calm during digestion. Better yet, top your bowl with a handful of fresh or dried blueberries. The berries contain antioxidants and Vitamin C which will also provide health benefits.

Men’s health regards far more than the physical. Many men are finding that maintaining a healthy diet is a good approach to emotional well-being as they age. Talk with providers to determine if diet and exercise could have a positive impact on your current health conditions and restore overall feelings of wellness experienced within this demographic. Watch the powerful impact that eating a well-rounded, healthy diet can have on self-esteem and peace of mind.
