Feeling down on Valentine's Day?

Hello everyone,
With Valentine's Day approaching, I thought it would be important to communicate to those of you who feel a sense of disappointment or depression at this time.

Many people become very 'down' and even suicidal on Feb. 14th.

Not being in a significant relationship is a main cause of disturbance on this day. Seeing others enjoying time with partners can trigger your own sense of loneliness.

You might be reminded of a relationship that did not work out and that might bring up feelings of regret or sadness.

Whatever your situation, I would like to suggest that you try to be kind to yourself on this day. Treat yourself nicely and try to give any negative self-talk a day off.

One thing I often point out to clients is that Vancouver is a wonderful city and we are very lucky to live near the ocean.

Go for a walk near the water if you can. Being near a body of water can be very soothing, especially the ocean. Somehow seeing the tides roll in and out can be a good reminder of the forces of nature and can be very calming and relaxing.

If you can spend Saturday night with a friend, that's great. If not, I recommend renting a comedy and just relaxing.

If you are up for doing an online search for a singles event, you might find something interesting to go to.

Also, please see the following link for more information on ways to handle Valentine's Day from a previous newsletter. You will also find the names of some relationship books that clients of mine have found very helpful.
