I realize that Valentine’s Day is tomorrow and many people can find this time of year very lonely and depressing. The weather is rainy and the days still turn into evening quite early. This time of year can feel slow and mundane after all the Christmas excitement and summer still feels a long way away. You may find yourself feeling detached from others. There might be pressure from credit cards after the holidays. You may be starting to realize that your good intentions from a New Year’s Resolution are not working out.
A few of helpful reminders are very basic but very useful:
Staying on top of your diet and getting a little bit of exercise are 2 of the best things you can do to help your body manage if you are having any feelings of depression. Reducing your caffeine intake and getting enough sleep are also things to keep in mind. Your body will feel better and your emotional self with benefit as well.
In regards to Valentine’s Day specifically, something to remember is that that not everybody celebrates it. Even some couples do not do anything special for this day. I remember someone once describing the negative feelings people feel during Valentine’s Day as being attributed to not feeling needed. Perhaps this rings bell with you? If so, find some way to make your life more fulfilling in the present so that you can take care of yourself emotionally. I will repeat the first tip from the Beating the Holiday Blues Newsletter: Volunteer. Giving is often a good way to help yourself feel better.
I would like to suggest some helpful books to read for help people who are already in relationships as well as those of you who would like to be in a fulfilling relationship one day. Educating yourself is a positive step forward.
- Will Our Love Last - Sam R. Hamburg
- The Seven Principles for Making a Marriage Work - John H. Gottman
- Getting the Love You Want - Harville Hendrix
One more book that I would like to add is Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus by John Gray. This book was very popular in the worlds of pop-psychology and self-help when it first came out. I recommend this book as I think it actually has a lot of helpful information for understanding the differences between men and women. It may help take a lot of confusion out of your relationship or prepare you for the future.
A previous newsletter from December 07 might be helpful for those of you suffering from a sense of loneliness or other emotion(s) this time of year. This newsletter can be found here:
